Debates & Volunteer Work

I had a great passion for public speaking and for voicing my opinion for various subjects. Thus, I entered in many debates starting with the Korean Round competition in Jeju. This kicked off my start for my love in debating and I went to the global round competition in Barcelona and I even got to the final round in the Yale University debate competition.

Along with debates, I also loved writing whether it was poetry or short stories, I really enjoyed expressing my emotions and thoughts into context. This led me to receive a certificate of excellence for my writing in my high school.

Volunteer Work

I went on a Nepal service trip from December 14th to the 24th as I wanted help people not only in Korea but those who were suffering abroad. I went to Nepal with a volunteer group and I taught young girls in schools how to play dodge ball, and despite not being able to properly communicate, they understood me through my facial expressions and hand gestures and I did too. It was a heart warming experience and I definitely want to visit Nepal again for more volunteer work.

Besides actual volunteer work, I worked as a tour guide for the school. Due to my immense love for computer science, I was in charge of introducing the computer science department. One of the parents were so impressed by my tour guide that they wrote to the headmaster about how much they enjoyed the tour.

My passion for Computing Technology

On 2011, I clearly remember the conversation I had with my mom when I was 8 years old. The great creator of Apple, Steve Jobs had just passed away and I was devastated. During the long conversation I had with my mom, I realized my interest in technology in general and I decided to start learning programming.

My first programming experience officially started on March 2012, when I was 9 years old. I was avid to start learning immediately and was excited to understand more in depth about programming. I started using a program called scratch, which was created by MIT. Although it was difficult, I was able to understand slowly more and more about the intricate process of programming and was able to create a few fun projects through the scratch program.

After this, I proceeded to learn up to the C++ programming language due to my growing interest.

On 2014, I was able to attend a summer camp held in the University of Washington that provided a world-class STEM and tech courses for kids and teenagers.

In this camp, I was able to create my own game module, specifically, for Minecraft.

After this summer camp, I was able to learn new programming techniques that I never knew about and I utilized it to make my own games. Although it was very difficult, through trial and error, I was able to create my own fun little game and I was very proud of myself for going through the strenuous process.

I branched out more by utilizing programming in musical terms. I used the Chatbox FX and created music through this programming system. Although it was evidently different from creating a game, the processes were similar in a way and I enjoyed discovering the different coding methods that have to be used to compose music.

After all these experiences in creating different types of music and games through programs, I entered a competition and competed with other students to develop creative codings.

Due to my consistent interest in computers, programming, and coding, I was able to maintain a grade of 7 out of 7 in computer science from grade 5 to 9. Also, I was able to win a gold prize for the KME (Korean Mathematics Evaluation). I think that my interests in the computer department really improved my math and science skills as programming branches out to both math and sciences.

Although I am still young, I will strive to learn more about computer Programming, Math, and Sciences in order to improve my knowledge in coding and create more structured games and programs for the future.
